How to Avoid Becoming a Victim of Burglary
Advice for Flat and Apartment residents 1) Always lock your front door - even when you are inside. 2) Use both locks on your flat door (deadlock and latch) 3) Check your door is solid and fitted with an approved lock (BS3621 or equivalent) Ask your landlord to upgrade if not. 4) Never buzz in or let strangers into the building - only allow entry for people you know or are expecting. 5) Don't prop open communal doors - they are for everyone's security 6) Report broken entry doors, gates or intercoms to your landlord, housing association or management immediately. 7) Keep windows locked, especially those that can be reached from the fire escapes, balconies or drainpipes. 8) Avoid leaving valuables in view of windows or balconies. 9) Use a spyhole, door chain or video doorbell before opening the door to anyone, 10) Don't leave keys in locks or visible near doors or windows 11) Be cautious with delivery drivers or visitors - if unsure verify their identity before opening the door, 12) Label your buzzer/intercom discreetly (eg flat number, not full name) 13) Get to know your neighbours - look out fo one another and report suspicious behaviour to the Police or building management. 14) Keep communal areas tidy and well lit - lighting deters intruders 15) If you have underground or shared parking, ensure gates close fully behind you before driving away. 16) Don't leave bikes or valuables in communal corridors or stairwells - use secure cycle stores or anchor points 17) Mark and register your valuables (eg, on https://orlo.uk/adI6a) and keep serial numbers recorded 18) Use timers or smart lights to make your flat look occupied if you're away 19) Keep post out of sight - consider a letter box cage or redirect mail when away for long periods 20) Avoid sharing travel or absence details on Social media 21) Report faults on CCTV promptly In an emergency please call 999, in a non-emergency please call 101, or use the online chat function on the main Greater Manchester Police website
